What I do with my money every payday 💸

Payday used to mean checking my balance, feeling briefly richer, and then hoping I still had enough once every bill, subscription, and random expense had taken its turn. 😅
Now I follow a simple routine that gives the money direction before I start spending it, everytime I get paid (monthly).
1. I check what came in
I confirm the deposit and where it came from and ince I receive both employment and business income, not every dollar has the same purpose.
2. I cover upcoming responsibilities
I consider myself my own responsibility, and so I have assigned a specific amount each month to get allocated towards my Neo Financial guilt-free spending account.
I then move money for bills, taxes, business costs, and other known expenses into the appropriate accounts or buckets, most of this is automated through my EQ and Wealthsimple accounts. This helps me avoid looking at one large balance and assuming all of it is available to spend.
3. I send something to future Carlos
I move predetermined amounts toward savings, investing, or another future goal. Different amounts go into different buckets, within my long-term savings accounts in EQ and Wealthsimple. The amounts can and do change overtime, but I would rather maintain the habit than wait for the perfect month to begin.
4. I review guilt-free spending
Once the important things are covered, I review my planned amount that went into my Neo account that I use for everyday spending. That gives me a clear boundary. If the money is there, I can generally spend it without mentally reviewing my entire financial life first.
5. Review the full system
Finally, I check my Monarch Money app to make sure everything looks reasonable, particularly which bills are coming up next and that I didn't miss anything. I am not reviewing every individual transaction. I mainly want to know that upcoming expenses are covered, future goals received something, and the amount left for spending makes sense. Especially since I have different sources of income.
The real goal
My payday routine is not about dividing every dollar perfectly. It is about making decisions before the money slowly disappears into unrelated purchases. Tracking shows me what already happened. This routine helps me decide what happens next.
Instead of asking one bank balance to tell me everything, I give each part of the money its own job. That has made managing my finances feel much simpler, even when life itself is not. :)
